Enter this gracious open-plan home and have your breath taken away. Even as the front door opens, you will find yourself delivered to - and surrounded by - the beauty, serenity and spectacular view of Kealakekua Bay.
EVERY ROOM (except baths) has a direct oceanfront view.
The water lapping at the back yard's rocks, is clear, cool and sparkling with sunlight. The awesome, cave pocked cliff that makes up the opposite shore, is known as 'The Pali'. The trail along the ridge of the Pali, was to the Hawaiians known as 'the pathway of the gods', or 'Kealakekua' in Hawaiian. At the pali's base the Captain Cook Monument and a small plaque mark the spot where Cook fell-- near a flashing beacon for modern nighttime mariners.
Dump your bags, and grab a deck chair and a glass of wine, in time to watch the sun create it's fiery farewell across the magical water as millions of stars come aglow. Be prepared to share the sunset with dolphins and whales in this most unique and beautiful corner of the planet.
Relax as you breathe in the aura of your private refuge for the most memorable vacation you'll ever have. Generous rooms, all with ocean view (except baths), outdoor eating pavilion, pool and deck - and, of course, the bay.
Prepare fresh and flavorful meals of local fish, tropical fruit, organic veggies, and Kona cofee-- all in a truly state-of-the-art kitchen with ocean views! (Induction cooktop, double oven, 2 sinks all swathed in 'green bamboo' granite).
All of this on a private, gated lane of 8 residences (some are estates with more than one home)
Please be aware that our home includes a swimming pool (not fenced or otherwise separated from the house itself) and about 100 feet of shoreline cliff (there is a large grass lawn between the house/pool/deck and the shoreline cliff).
Both the shoreline and the pool present obvious hazards to children, elderly persons or anyone with vision, mobility or other impairment. Access to the sea/bay is not permitted from our property, and entering the shoreline area (lava rock) is not permitted. You must contain your activities within the house/pool/deck/lawn area only. The pool presents obvious hazards to any non-swimmers or persons who may fall into it. Our home is not recommended for groups with children, elderly, impaired/disabled or non-swimming members.

"We had a great time at Alaula! The week flew by too quickly and it's been a tough re-entry back to reality. We saw some epic sunsets from the edge of the back yard and on our 2nd night were treated with an extraordinary whale show right off in the bay... jumping, tail slapping and breaching! We figured they were either mating or giving birth... Wow, super cool and memorable. "

"A true getaway. Peaceful, alluring, inspiring. Ideal adult retreat. Perched on the edge of Kealakekua Bay, a simple yet elegant house in a drop dead gorgeous setting. The pool, the outdoor seating areas, and the lawn received the most of our attention. Beautiful kitchen and living areas. Stayed: December 2015"

"Just Dreamy What a wonderful place! The sound of the surf and the sparkle of the light on the water is enough to enchant the soul, but add a well appointed home and a fabulous pool, and, well... it was hard to leave. We had an amazing time! Thank-you for your generous hospitality! Stayed: November 2015"

"A great vacation A gorgeous view, a beautiful home, a perfect spot to vacation. We stayed here for ten days with our two twentysomthing kids and our son's girlfriend. It was a perfect 'home base' for hiking and snorkeling adventures around the island. When not out and about, we spent most of our time sitting in the chairs by the edge of the water and just soaking up the view. Krista gave us great recommendations for 'local' dining as well. Stayed: May 2015"

"All folks said is spot on! Having not been to the Big Island before, our three generation family was looking for a house: nice, spacious, convenient, private, on the water with a pool. It was wonderful to be able to sit outside to eat meals in the evening or coffee, fruit and a roll in the morning in pajamas. With a seven year old granddaughter, the pool afforded close supervision ("watch me, watch me, watch me do this-- and this"). We did find ourselves in the pool for a morning and evening dip every day. The days were spent exploring the seahorse farm, the volcano park, black sand beach and turtles, quilting shop for fabric and just around the corner, a bead shop where we found wonderful lava beads (Da Bead Shop). If you are an artist, Akamai Art Supply is not to be missed - outstanding supplies. We did the snorkel trip on the Fair Wind, especially good for anyone of any age or ability. We also snorkeled for free at the beach next to the harbor and saw hundreds of fish. We were very happy to be be out of Kona proper, as the Vog (volcano smog) was showing off while we were there. Don't be tricked at the volcano crater with an arrow pointing to a trail -a most beautiful trail by the way, showing the way to the Lava Tube. You can drive close to the entrance. Must be a secret from Pele as no one suggested a handicapped person could drive closer. Thanks to the owners for making the perfect accommodations comfortable and available. We had the time of our lives! Stayed: March 2015"

"a Beautiful house in a Beautiful place You can not ask for a better ocean-front house than this one on the shores of Kealakekua Bay, a few miles south of the town of Kona. You are close enough to enjoy Kona but when you turn off the main highway and drive down Napoo’poo road to the bay, you are surrounded by small farms with coffee and macadamia nut trees, and you know you are now in ‘old’ Hawai’i. But there is nothing ‘old’ about this house. The owner John is a pleasure to deal with and since he spends several weeks each year in the house, he insures, along with Krista, the local care taker, that the place is in great shape and feels like home. Krista, who has lived nearby for over 20 years, is a wealth of info and could not be more hospitable. The house is very comfortable and extremely well stocked. The kitchen is beautiful, with new appliances, granite countertops and koa wood cabinets, and a new top-of-the-line washer and dryer in the laundry room. The ‘great’ room is truly great and three bedrooms, all with prime ocean-front views, means there is plenty of space for everyone. The grounds are gorgeous with lots of outdoor seating and a large grill and dining table. There is no better location on the Big Island than this little dead-end road and this house on K Bay - providing that you want to be ocean front and Not surrounded by hundreds of people. There is nothing more peaceful than sitting here in the back yard during whale season and watching humpback whales and spinner dolphins in the ocean in front of you. I’m convinced that the best snorkeling and shore diving spot in Hawai’i is a quick 5 minute drive to ‘Two Step’ at the Place of Refuge, one of the most historic places on the island. Other ‘must do’ things while here are : kayak in K bay and snorkel at the Cook monument; visit the Historic Kona coffee farm at the top of the hill; visit the Big Island Bee & Honey farm that is 2 miles from the house; stop in and see the beautiful Painted Church that is nearby; have lunch at the Coffee Shack at the top of the hill for fine food with fabulous views of the Bay and the surrounding coffee farms; buy local produce and fresh Big Island tuna or marlin or mahi-mahi from the local grocery store and grill them at the house; do a night dive or snorkel with the Manta rays; visit Volcanoes national park. You will surely run out of time before you run out of things to do here. We can’t wait until we are back at the beautiful house in this beautiful place! Stayed: January 2015"

"A Perfect Three Generation Vacation A three-generation vacation can sometimes be fraught with tensions. Not so at this wonderful house overlooking Kealakekua Bay. The house is beautifully laid out and has room for everyone to find their own space without stepping on each other's toes. In the end, however, we all spent a lot of time sitting on the clifftop watching the waves bashing the lava, the whales (two adults and a calf), the spinner dolphins gamboling in the waves and even a green sea turtle. The kitchen is perfectly laid out and stocked including with a supply of spices and herbs that I have never seen in a vacation home -- thank you John! When we weren't out enjoying the island sights, especially in the southern part of the island and Hilo areas, we were cooking in the kitchen, barbecuing on the patio and spending time together sitting around the table and the pool. Krista, the manager of the property, was exceptionally helpful with advice about where to shop, what to visit and how to find a good deep sea fishing outfit. As photographers we were thrilled with the many photo opportunities at the house, including a setting full moon over the bay and spectacular sunsets. The small beach nearby was perfect to take our grandson for a morning of playing in the sand and the waves. All in all, one of the most wonderful family vacations we have had in a most spectacular location. Thank you John for letting us share your little bit of paradise. We will definitely be back! Stayed: December 2014"

"Paradise Found At the risk of just listing a string of superlatives, we had an amazing family retreat to John and Steve's perfect hideaway. The house is charming and well stocked, perfect for cooking meals and enjoying the surf and sights while you do it. What we particularly liked was feeling like we were among locals, and away from the tourist melee. The location encourages exploration of the south and eastern part of the Big Island, while also being close enough to Kona and the northern resorts to allow for easy visits with vacationing friends. Only we almost felt guilty escaping the resort enclave for our small piece of paradise by the Pacific. Stayed: December 2014"

"Hawaii Like you want it to be We are lucky and got to go back to Alaula Kai for a second time. You wonder whether your memories are inflated, but really this place is much better then you can remember. From the moment you open that front door and see the pool, the palm trees, and that wonderful peaceful bay, you are reminded why you always smile when thinking about your time here. Then the spinners come to entertain you during your morning coffee on the lawn or you simply look over the lava coast and see the tangs swimming by. If you want tranquility this is the place. We always find it hard to leave, but when you are energetic, there is always a kayak across to the monument or a short ride down to two step for a great snorkel. And I have not even mentioned where it gets its name, the sunsets which are different every night and gorgeous. We can't wait until we are lucky enough to come back for a third and fourth and many more times to come. Alaula Kai will remind you why you love Hawaii. Stayed: August 2014"

"Big Island Nirvana This is simply an amazing home. The lay out of the house is perfect for families and the house itself is beautiful. It overlooks Kealakekua bay and the Captain Cook monument. Fabulous sunsets over the ocean, beautiful water to gaze at, put your SUP and paddle across looking at all the sea life and very likely being entertained by the resident Spinner dolphins. In the heart of Kona coffee country for those who want to visit a farm and taste great coffee. Can't say enough good things, can't wait till I get the chance to return. Stayed: August 2014"

"Most relaxing vacation My mother lives in the area and when my family of 4 decided to visit we wanted to find a place that we would all enjoy. What better than a home on the bay with fantastic views and a pool! I am a bit of a research nut so I combed through every rental by the bay and after comparing prices, floor plan, and views this was the one. It even has a grassed back yard! The house has been fully updated. The bathrooms and kitchen are perfect. Since the home is set up around a courtyard, everyone can come together or enjoy privacy. There is a large outdoor dining table that was the perfect place for meals, coloring, playing cards or just visiting. I spent most of my time perched in a chair reading my book as I gazed out over the bay. The pool is a good temperature, but it is deep. The shallow end is 4’ or so and gets deeper. My boys became good swimmers quickly. My husband and I both commented that this was the most relaxing vacation. Since you are staying in a home with a pool and a great view, you don't feel the pressure to leave and find adventure…..except perhaps to visit manini beach a few seconds drive away. The owner is responsive and very easy to work with. The deposit was returned within a week after we returned home. His local property manager Krista does a wonderful job at check-in/out and is available to answer questions. I highly recommend staying here – we plan to return as soon as we can! Stayed: July 2014"

"A wonderful week! We loved staying in John's beautiful home! John and Krista were great to work with. The home is perfectly located in the town of Captain Cook, away from the more touristy areas of Kona and Kohala, although we enjoyed visiting those areas for a meal or a stroll. On our second day, we kayaked on the bay and swam with spinner dolphins for close to two hours; they jumped and spun around just 10 feet from us. That night we snorkeled with the manta rays with a great tour operator, Blue Sea Cruises. We were in the water for 30 minutes with eight enormous mantas and they were within inches of us. Almost too close for me! On Tuesday evening we went to a luau at the Mauna Kea resort, which was very well done as far as luaus go. Wednesday we snorkeled and kayaked again. We enjoyed dinner at Sam Choy's that night. Thursday my husband and sons played golf at Makalei Golf Club while I enjoyed a massage at the Fairmont Orchid. Friday we spent the entire day at the Kilauea Volcano park which was fabulous. And then after leaving this lovely home on Saturday, we enjoyed a delicious lunch by the water at the Four Seasons resort. We also enjoyed swimming with turtles and reef sharks nearby at Two Step on Friday and Saturday mornings. All in all we had a fantastic time, and John's home was the perfect place to relax and enjoy ourselves after activity-filled days. Stayed: June 2014A wonderful week! "Real Big Island Paradise We just spent nine days in this fabulous house and are still missing our life on the Big Island. There are no words that can describe that view. The pictures don't do it justice - you just have to go see it for yourself. The house itself was just perfect for our party of five adults and our one year old daughter. The layout worked really well to give everyone enough privacy while providing great views from every room and lots of communal space for cooking, eating, drinking, sunbathing and just lounging around. Our days were spent exploring the local area for snorkel spots (all the best ones on the island are right nearby) and road tripping to the volcano and other fun sites. Our evenings were spent making cocktails, grilling fresh fish on that awesome BBQ and watching the sunset while our daughter played happily on the giant lawn. How much better can life get? Kealakekua Bay has always been a special place to me, and the out of the way location of this house is exactly what we were looking for. Just up the road you can pick up some Kona coffee at the Co-op and grab a fish sandwich or plate lunch and some shave ice at Kalamas. We went into Kona a couple times (I recommend a trip to Kona Brewing Co if you make it to town), but mostly couldn't wait to get back to the house. If you want to slow down, escape the tourists and live like a local in the best location on the Big Island, this is the house for you. John, the owner, was super easy to work with, and Krista was a delight and quick to respond to anything we needed. We really hope to make it back here sometime in the near future. Rent this house! Don't just stare at the pictures...go there now! :D Stayed: August 2013"

"Spectacular Views! My family of six stayed at this lovely property for four nights in August 2013 and were sorry to leave at the end of our trip. The listing description and photos accurately describe and reflect this fabulous home, its location, and appearance. The view of the ocean, the bay, and sunsets from the yard are truly spectacular. The property was very clean and well maintained---my wife was very comfortable and that's saying something as cleanliness is extremely important to her, We saw a few ants the first morning, but we followed the instructions regarding keeping the kitchen area clean and had no further issues. The owner and manager are helpful, a pleasure to deal with, and very gracious. We caused some damage to a closet, but the owner did not deduct any amount from the deposit, which he promptly returned after our stay. We enjoyed kayaking and snorkeling in the bay. We have rented in Hawaii through VRBO several times in the past, and this was by far our best experience. We would very highly recommend this property to friends and relatives. Stayed: August 2013"

"The BEST place to stay in Hawaii This is a top notch place to stay! It is perfect for a peaceful, relaxing get away. We stayed with three generations (grandparents, parents and kids) and all of us raved about the house and backyard. The pool is bigger and deeper that it looks in the pictures. And there is no way to capture the magic of sitting out watching the sun as it goes down over the bay. All the bathrooms and bedrooms are good and well maintained. The kitchen is super nice and big – it made food prep easy and allowed everyone to be involved. One of my favorite things about the house was falling asleep and waking up to the sounds of the surf pounding the rocks. It was just awesome! Kealakekua Bay is a very nice location at the bottom of hill. The small village of houses is quaint with a minimal beach and park within walking distance. There are local roadside fruit stands all over the place and the quality of the mangos was excellent. If you are a coffee drinker, there are many, many places to buy and drink 100% Kona coffee. We also loved the $4 leis at Ryan’s roadside leis stand. The gated drive adds a level of security. The best part is that you are only a 5-10 minute drive from Honaunau Bay (2 Step) which offers excellent snorkeling. We would wake up and snorkel for 30 minutes first thing in the morning to beat the crowds. We also took the advice of another reviewer and went on a fishing trip with Captain Bob and Thrill Seeker. We caught 2 Onos and Bob cut one up that we used for dinner over 4 nights. Volcanoes National Park is worth a trip as well. The night dive with the mantas is not to be missed. We also trekked up to Hapuna Beach and did a look in at Waikoloa. We were so happy that we chose the house at Kealakekua Bay. This is the best we have stayed at and I would give it my highest recommendation to friends and family. Stayed: June 2013"

"Your own personal piece of paradise. What a magnificent property! This home was the perfect place for my family and me to rest and relax in between our island adventures. Alaula Kai is beautifully maintained. The kitchen has everything necessary to create wonderful meals. The bedrooms are comfortable and spacious. The pool was a special treat for all of us to enjoy any time of day. There are pool towels and some floats available to use. There is no air conditioning, but with the windows/screens it made no difference at all. The water is just spectacular to watch and the dolphins made random appearances to entertain us. Families traveling with small children should know that the bedrooms do open right on to the pool deck. To prevent any accidents, we packed along a mobile door alarm (or two) to signal us in the night if anyone left their rooms. It is about 15 min drive to a local grocery store that had a good selection of foods. The drive in to Kailua-Kona was probably 30-40 min. Our favorite afternoon stop was at a shaved ice stand on Napoopoo Rd. coming down the hillside towards the bay. I just can not say enough great things about this home. It was so easy to get used to. The efforts put forth by the owner and the property manager are very clear. They have worked together to create the perfect place to unwind and take full advantage of Hawai'i. We can not wait to return to Alaula Kai. Thank you, John!! Thank you, Krista!! Stayed: June 2013"

"Gorgeous home, gorgeous island, gorgeous bay My parents, husband, and I stayed at this beautiful home for a week at the beginning of June. It was sheer paradise. We swam in the bay in the mornings; hiked; walked; swam in the pool; and generally felt we had gone to paradise. Everything was exquisite: the kitchen is highly functional; the house is very clean; and overall the house strikes just the right balance between island elegant and informal. I would NOT recommend for families with young children due to safety hazard of the pool and ocean; other than that one item for consideration, every other human being will be blissfully happy here! "Vacation Perfection In is hard to fine words to describe this rental property. It is even more spectacular than the gorgeous photos suggest. All of our family agreed that it was the perfect setting for our visit -- far superior to the option of staying in some tourist resort. Everyone enjoyed sunsets and meals on the patio, dropping off to sleep to the sound of the surf, and waking each morning to the glorious views of Kealakekua Bay -- all while enjoying the feeling of total privacy. There cannot be many better homesites on the entire island. The home itself is spotlessly clean and impeccably maintained; and it includes a kitchen that is not only beautiful, but also wonderfully equipped. Both the owner and the property manager were helpful beyond our expectations. They guided us in selecting activities, finding shopping and choosing restaurants. We can recommend this vacation rental without any reservation whatsoever. It is simpy perfect! The highlight of the activities during our visit was the night manta ray snorkel with Jack's Dive Locker. We also enjoyed the 5-hour snorkel adventure with Sea Quest and fishing with Thrill Seeker (we caught a 40 lb. Ono that was fantastic on the grill). Captain Bob will not only take you fishing, but will also stop for a snorkel opportunity in Kealakekua Bay at your request. A day-long excursion to the Volcano Park was worth the drive. We enjoyed breakfast at The Coffee Shack (with a phenomenal view from its lanai) and a delicious Japanese-Hawaiian dinner at Teshima's. Stayed: April 2013"

"Most relaxing vacation ever!! Wonderful place to stay! Cannot recommend it highly enough. Most relaxing vacation ever!! Our teens enjoyed having their own space and we enjoyed that too! The perfect location to relax, unwind and reconnect as a family. Quiet, peaceful, serene and the most amazing view of Kealakekua Bay. We saw pilot whales and spinner dolphins from our back yard. We loved it so much we rarely left. This house has everything you need. Amazingly well-equipped kitchen, comfortable living area and did I mention the views!! Krista was awesome! We felt we made a new friend on the island. She shared a ton of information with us and was available if we had questions. Her excellent recommendations really helped us maximize our time and her insider tips helped us find many hidden gems. Don't miss the night snorkel with manta rays. A huge hit with the entire family. We went on the Hula Kai - highly recommended. If they re-open K-bay to kayaking we also highly recommend that too. Our family enjoyed a wonderful morning on the bay kayaking and snorkeling. DLNR stopped this activity temporarily from Jan 1 so check with Krista if you are interested. We cannot wait to return to Alaula Kai again. Stayed: December 2012"

"Paradise Found - we're hooked! We've always had good luck with VRBO listed properties, and this was no exception. We found this to be the perfect place for us because: 1) its off the beaten path; no vehicle traffic noises at all 2) listen to the ocean waves all day and night 3) the unobstructed view of Kealakekua Bay and Capt Cook Monument was worth the price alone 4) quiet and secure neighborhood None of the above is to say that the home wasn't wonderful because it was - the layout was perfect for the property. Nothing was left undone, we never felt like we needed anything else. The property description is accurate, very clean, and immaculately maintained. Wireless/wired internet worked very well. Pack lightly and wash your clothing. If you're staying in the area, you're most likely interested in snorkeling around the monument. From this property, it's a 10 minute walk to the pier to launch a kayak or a 10 minute drive to the hiking trailhead at the top of Napoopoo road. Several snorkel tour boat companies are within a 20 minute drive (unless you hit "rush" hour traffic). Two-step is a quick 4 mile drive to the south. We enjoyed the local farmer's market and the South Kona Fruit stand - can't get enough of the Hawaiian fruits while we're there, not to mention kona coffee and mac nuts - all freshly available nearby. On previous visits to the island, we always felt like we needed to be out doing various activities - this time we never really wanted to leave our easy chairs, binoculars, and books. Our 8-day stay here was the most relaxing vacation we've ever had. We're hooked. Stayed: December 2012"

"What a Glorious Place Although we have only been here a few days, we have already fallen in love with the spot you have chosen. Everyday, we spend hours in the morning and evening sitting out on the lawn with coffee, a drink or simply with the view. We went out with Kona Boys for a kayak and snorkel to the monument. There were many pods of dolphins, spinning and swimming all around us. We even saw a nugget this afternoon as we informed a new calf is called. The dolphins have come directly by the house with some regularity too. Before this time, we had never rented a house. In some ways it was nerve racking. What if we got it wrong? What if the pictures were not correct, but you know, as I searched I was continuously brought back to Alaula Kai. Something drew me to this home here on the most ideal bay in Hawaii. Not only was the place as advertised, but so much more that can't be told by pictures alone. I can tell you that the few days here has already lowered my blood pressure and increased my awareness of the surroundings. We are grateful for your willingness to share such a wonderful place. While our current visit has only just begun, I can guarantee you that we will be back. This place is now in our blood. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to experience such a magical place. "Better than Advertised We've rented vacation homes before, but this is the 1st time the house really is all that you see online and more. We spent a week in paradise-- did the volcano, Hilo, Waimea and a sunset cruise. But the best part was coming "home" (or staying home on the days we didn't adventure around). I'll never forget the view of the dazzling blue/green/teal/aqua/azure/violet water in the morning-- the fun of seeing boats come and go across the bay-- and falling asleep to a gentle breeze and the sound of the waves. To wake up to bird song and another lovely, relaxing day. Stayed: September 2012"

"What a fantastic home to make a great vacation in paradise. Thank you very much for the use of your beautiful house. My sisters and I took the first real vacation in our life and chose this house - great choice. Paradise is right. The dolphins, sunsets and pool are absolute truth in advertising. The dolphins swam and spun by at least once a day. The sunsets at dinner time were better than any TV dinner we have ever had. The pool was a terrific way to ‘cool off’ in the tropical ‘heat’ of December. The house was extremely comfortable and had a wonderful indoor/outdoor feel with a great view from ever room and the constant sound of the ocean was very soothing. The house itself felt very secluded, like we had our own piece of paradise. Our only regret seemed to be staying at home so much we didn't explore the island enough. I think we all agreed that sitting by the edge of the yard watching the bay is the definition of vacation. Lava Kitty was a great addition and she really made us welcome. Krista - of course - was enormous help and I hope we didn't abuse her good nature. We highly recommend this location if you are planning a trip to … well, anywhere. Thanks again John, Krista and Lava Kitty. Stayed: December 2011"

"If Captain Cook came back to Kealakekua Bay, he'd stay here!!! As soon as you walk through the double, entrance doors and into the covered lanai and heated pool area all you can think is, "Wow". The caretaker, Krista, provided a warm reception and valuable advice on nearby shopping, restaurants and sight-seeing spots. Besides the Captain Cook memorial, you are within a brief walk to the family-oriented Manini Beach and within 5 miles of the Place of Refuge and the Painted Church. Just beyond Manini Beach there is kayak access for those wanting to paddle out to the memorial. When you're not busy elsewhere, you'll find yourself watching the stunning views of the bay--sunsets, dolphins, boats and kayak activity. There is a gourmet, superbly-equipped kitchen and great outdoor grill for the cooks in the party. It is a very relaxing and quiet place; one that may give you a sense of what "Old Hawaii" was like. It will become habit-forming. Stayed: October 2011"

"Private, Views, Waterfront We always appreciate accurate traveler's opinions of VRBO properties. I must say that Alaula Kai did not disappoint. John, the owner, has made certain that all amenities were provided. My wife is a avid cook, thus was pleasantly surprised with the new, completely stocked kitchen. This is truly an indoor/outdoor home with beautiful landscaping front and back. We spent most of our time outside at lawn's edge adjacent to the lapping waves or in the cabana which provided comfortable covered seating for six. Krista, the local house manager, was extremely helpful and John was very easy to work with. We can't wait to return this seaside paradise. Stayed: September 2011"

"Paradise Found I'll forever treasure our week in this private paradise. A gated road leads to just a few homes along the water-- but not just ANY water. It's the most stunning blues/greens and other colors you can imagine. The house takes FULL advantage of it's perfect setting on Kealakekua Bay. You couldn't avoid the view if you wanted to (and you'd be nuts to want that!) We drank our coffee at the chairs right at the edge of the lawn, overlooking the bay. Dolphins cruised by twice. You can see the tropical fish from the shore ( but WAY better to grab a snorkel and jump into the bay at Manini Beach-- a short walk away). The house is totally equipped to make killer meals and relax. We played scrabble outside between dips in the pool (heated). Lounged around and explored nearby sites (the "Painted Church" is amazing!). Snorkeling is great in Kealakekua Bay, and also at nearby (3 mile straight shot on a little road) "Two Step". The local care taker is wonderful... kind, generous and not around unless you need her help. Stayed: August 2011"

"Better than Advertised!! What a wonderful home. Accommodations are top-notch - even for foodies like us!! As soon as you walk through the front door you know that you've arrived in a private paradise. The views are incredible and ever-changing - we never saw the same sunset twice. We were on the island for ten days and did a lot of exploring all over the island - Kohala coast beaches, ziplining up in Hawi, helicopters and botanical gardens in Hilo, luau in Kona.... and the home was a great base from which to operate. Krista, the local caretaker, is wonderful and happy to help with suggestions & directions. I can't recommend this home enough for anyone considering a private peaceful sanctuary. Stayed: June 2011"

"Alaulakai - a great place to relax! We have been coming back to this bay for almost 20 years and this has become a wonderful second home to us! The house is comfortable, very well cared for and top quality with just the right things you need for a relaxing vacation away from the bustling resorts. The situation is stunning and we never tire of the views of the ocean and Kealakekua Bay and of watching the visiting whales. Krista, who manages the house for the owners, is a very kind and generous person, will make you feel most welcome and will happily share her knowledge of the local history and places. It is a good location for exploring the south end of the island, coffee farms, the nearby historic Place of Refuge and Volcano National Park. Alaulakai is an excellent place to stay. "Right at home...on the edge of paradise! It’s rare when you rent a vacation home and immediately feel at home! The beds were comfy, the gourmet kitchen had every gadget you could possibly need, the indoor/outdoor layout of the home was ideal for relaxing, entertaining and taking in the awesome sunsets. And this wonderful home sits on one of the most gorgeous pieces of property on the Kealakekua Bay. All you need is an umbrella drink! Stayed: March 2011"

"WOW, even better than the pictures! This home is a fantastic vacation rental--very relaxing, very quiet. The kitchen is great and we ate many meals on the covered patio dining table. "Living the Dream Walk in the front door on a sunny day and you will feel like a Hawaiian Dorothy going from black lava fields to the Technicolor world of OZ. This house truly exceeds expectations and we would sometimes feel like it wasn't real. An absolutely beautiful setting and a perfect house for families. The house itself is in perfect condition with an immaculate (and incredibly well-stocked) kitchen. Everything worked well and it's clear the owners have thought about the needs of renters. Comfy beds, nice linens and towels and plenty of furniture on which to relax (inside and out). The pictures show the house accurately only it's better in person! I think my 16-year-old daughter put it best when one beautiful evening by the waterfront she said "this is really one of the first places I've been able to truly relax in a long time". Well said. Visit this home and you'll know what she means. Stayed: December 2010"

"This property was the highlight of our trip and the reality exceeds the website pictures. It was comfortable, the kitchen was fab - we fixed all our meals in as no resturant could come close to the oceanside setting that we had from the moment we awoke until dark. The "blue grotto pool" as we named it for the nighttime swimming lights was the perfect crown on this wonderful house. We only left to kayak and snorkel in the bay. John, the owner, was very helpful and responsive. Krista, the local manager was a great resource. We will return again and again.... it was perfection. Stayed: October 2010"

"OMG! BETTER than the listing! 10+ The entire experience was a 10+ The owner was straightforward and easy to deal with. The local care taker is a GEM (helped us w/ a rental car and some reservations and LOTS of advice). And the house.... THAT's the OMG! It's just stunning. A simple home-- but you can't really tell where the indoors ends, and the outdoors begins. The views are amazing. Dolphins cruised by, and whales too. The sunsets were the perfect-- and amazing-- accompaniment to our nightly happy hour and dinner. Even comes with a neighborhood cat-- Lava Kitty-- who wanders by to see what's being served-- but in a totally polite and respectable way. She must mooch off all 8 homes on this lovely, private seaside lane. It really doesn't get better than this! Stayed: October 2010"

"Beautiful location! The views are as beautiful as the pictures show. It was a perfect location for our group get away. The sunsets were spectacular and it was so serene to wake up to the sounds of waves hitting the rocks every morning. The place is very well designed, there's a view from almost every room. The grounds and house are very well kept and has almost every amenity you can think of. We will definitely be repeat renters. Can't wait to go back. Thanks for a memorable vacation! "Magnificent Location, Fabulous House, Great People We were 2 couples + 2 grown kids. We slogged through so many vacation listings. This place was tops on our list and it didn't disappoint a bit. The owner is very organized with the paperwork and payments. And the house.... It's immaculate. And SO well thought out. If someone gave you this spectacular piece of land and said "now design a vacation home" this is about the best anyone could do. Kealakekua Bay-- and all its spectacular shades of blue-- comes into every room visually. It's all totally comfortable, beautiful and RELAXING! The kitchen is amazing- it was such joy to make meals even as we stared at the bay-- and to eat them at the outdoor dining pavilion (once even in the rain!~ it has a roof). The tiny street (gated even) has only a few homes and is quiet and private. Snorkel at Manini Beach or at "Two Step" (two steps off the shore and your in the water- Easy!) Both of these are about 5 minutes away by car (OK, we did walk one day to Manini- 20 minutes). Tons of fish, a couple of turtles. One day the dolphins cruised right by the house at about 4:00pm-- we'd seen them that very morning at Two Step. Stayed: September 2010"

"AWESOME VACATION HOME! Kealakekua Bay is a beautiful bay where the snorkeling is great and dolphins like to hang out. This wonderful home sits right on the Bay and is an excellent place to relax. Enjoy the pool when it gets just a little too warm, although the breeze on the Bay keeps one pretty cool. Sunsets at night were spectacular! The house has all the amenities one needs and the yard, pool and view are just icing on the cake! I highly recommend this property to anyone wanting to get away from it all. Stayed: July 2010"

"Girls Gone Wild OK.. we're not exactly girls... celebrating a 50th and a 60th birthday w/ 4 gal pals. It was a wonderful experience. We wanted peace and quiet and beauty-- and we really got it ALL. We're not that "outdoorsy" anymore, but this place is more luxurious than anything-- at least for us. We did go swimming in the bay (via Manini Beach) one day, and another day 3 miles away at "Two Step"-- just two steps to plop in the wonderful clear water. We also flopped around in the pool all the time. The birds woke us gently, the stars (gazillions of them) and the sound of the waves on the shore sent us off to dreamland each night. We watched movies at night, went out to eat, went to all the local sites and the volcano-- but mostly we just stayed "home" to drink it all in. Stayed: January 2010"

"WHAT a vacation! We had a hard time finding dates and getting our group committed-- but the owner worked with us by holding some dates-- and it was REALLY worth the trouble. No wonder this place books up! Lots of folks come back over and over. It's hard to describe how lovely it all is. In a way, it's a simple house with big rooms and windows. But on this site it's just amazing. All the rooms have huge windows looking out to the wonderful bay (and the pool). The kitchen is amazingly beautiful and functional. You just kind of meld with the place. The home is immaculate and stunning, but it's really the setting that is awe inspiring. If you've not been to Kealakekua Bay, you're in for a treat. "If you can't relax here..... You might need counseling! It's like floating IN the bay... the waves gently wash the black lava cliff right at the edge of the lawn. The water's so clear you can see the fish from the lawn. Kayaks, Hawaiian canoes and a few tour boats come and go (more in the middle of the bay, or on the other side-- not right at the house itself). We played the world's longest and slowest game of Scrabble right outside... Take your turn, look at the water, have a drink, jump in the pool, take your turn, have a nosh... Everything in the house (and the house itself) is top quality. Stayed: July 2008"

"This place COOKS Get it? Captain Cook met his maker just across the bay (as Mark Twain says... "justifiable homicide"). AND if you like to cook... you'll NEVER do it in a more beautiful, better equipped kitchen with a better view. The only word for this place is "spectacular". Stayed: July 2009"

"SO Wonderful! Want a vacation you'll always remember? Grab this place. We've done so 4 times over the years. The only "problem" here is that you'll never want to leave! Every day when I get to work, my screensaver is a shot of our family gathered in the yard, with stunning Kealakekua Bay behind us-- it gets me through the day! We kayaked across the bay with dolphin escorts, we flippered around Manini Beach. The birds and butterflies and geckos entertained us. We spotted whales, just by sitting in the chairs at the edge of the lawn. I hate cooking-- but it didn't feel like "work" here-- it was fun and beautiful in this kitchen. The kitchen-- like all the other rooms-- overlooks the bay and ocean and is just steps from the outdoor table (we never ate inside). Stayed: April 2009"

"It really is perfection! Our family has had the joy of staying in this home many times over the last 10 years. We really feel like it's OUR home. It's so comfortable-- really luxurious but also casual. Three big bedrooms all face the water, as does the main wing of livingroom/kitchen/dining. The furnishings and finishes are top of the line. Nice owner, very straightforward process. And our security deposit arrived home less than a week after we did. Stayed: September 2009"

"Best of 15 Trips to Hawaii We were blessed to swim with dolphins on 2 separate occasions. The undersea life is amazing in Kealakekua Bay, and 3 miles away at "Two Step". AND THIS HOUSE-- is really a dream home. It has everything you can imagine, and is organized so that you can find it all. The kitchen was perfect for our "group cooking and feeding frenzies" If you tire of the bay, or if the waves are too big, the pool is just like your own private beach-- but without sand in your sandwiches! "Wonderful Water World Kealakekua Bay may well have the world's most beautiful and inviting waters. The colors are amazing-- the clarity sublime-- the undersea creatures captivating. As if this weren't enough, you could opt for the pool (solar heater) at this LOVELY relaxed home. It's luxurious without being "prissy". Just big comfortable rooms, fantastic bed, spa-like bathrooms, and a kitchen that won't quit. EVERY room has a KNOCK OUT ocean view. Really nice owner-- straightforward pricing and communication. Lovely local care-taker too-- very helpful, but not at all intrusive (lives nearby). Great find, well worth the splurge. Stayed: February 2010"

"OMG! Fantastic TOTALLY as advertised or BETTER. Unpack, relax and sink into THIS place. The view is amazing-- far better than just "oceanfront", the property and the house looks across Kealakekua Bay AND out to sea. Lots of black shoreline, frothing waves, green vines dripping over lava cliff to the sea. We saw TONS of whales flopping around, just out from the house. "best house on the bay we have been coming to kealakekua bay for 20 years and have now stayed at this fantastic home 4 times , and it is by far the best house on the bay! from the breathtaking views when you walk thru the doors to the beautiful furnishings to the distinctive appointments to the whales, dolphins, fish and turtles readily seen while lounging in the chairs or the hammock; or cooling off in the pool, it is a piece of paradise in one of the best places in all the islands. we just keep coming back for more. "Away from it all in the coffee belt My family and I just returned from eight glorious days at this beautiful home and we agree completely with every compliment the other reviewers made. This is the home for you if you want to experience the real Hawaii. It is definitely away from it all. Having stayed in the heart of Kailua-Kona a few times, this was a much quieter and private place to stay. It was such a pleasure not only enjoying this very comfortable home, but the local shopping area as well. We found a great yoga studio, book store, natural food market, pizza place (Patz Pies, yum!), antique store and art gallery. If you like coffee, and nothing compares to real Kona coffee, you will be happy to know that this home is located right in the "coffee belt" region of the Big Island. We thoroughly enjoyed checking out the local coffee farms. It was a great way to get to know the local farmers and learn about the area. Looking back at that outing, I think it was kind of like wine tasting in the Napa Valley, but with caffeine. My 11 year old twins loved this house, too. They had a blast swimming in the pool, watching the colorful and curious geckos, and snorkeling in the area. This review would not be complete without a special note about the owner, John Dennison. He is as nice a person you could ever hope to meet. Relaxed, gracious, helpful, warm and welcoming. His local caretaker, Krista is also wonderful. We felt very reassured that she was always available for any questions we had. In short, this was by far the most relaxing and enjoyable vacation we have ever had and will be back again. "No place I'd rather be I have stayed at this house twice in the last few years and I still can't believe how wonderful it is. I have been renting homes on the Big Island for over fifteen years now and none compare with this one. The house is furnished and appointed as one would if you lived there year round. It is immaculate. The kitchen is spectacular, with every utensil and gadget one could desire. The rooms are spacious. There are screens on all of the windows (this may not seem like a big deal but when you are in Hawaii, there are bugs!). The pool is a wonderful addition and the view is unlike anything you will see elsewhere. Every night we sat at the water's edge in great Adirondack chairs and watched the sunsets...each one more beautiful than the last! Do yourself a favor and just rent this property once....you will come back again and again. My two experiences there were the two most relaxing vacations I have ever had. Stayed: July 2009"

"So glad we stayed HERE I wanted to let you know how much we enjoyed our stay at your house. What a beautiful home and the location was perfect. I now see what you meant by the other end of the neighborhood being a little busy. I am so glad of the decision we made to stay at your place. We did want to leave! What a disappointment going to the house we rented in Volcano compared to yours. We rented kayaks one day and the spinning dolphins were in the bay. What a great experience! There are so many things we didn't get to do and hope to get back to the big island someday soon and would definitely like to stay in your home again. Thank you again! Mahalo, Stayed: June 2009"

"Swimming in K Bay and relaxing at Alaulakai Our stay in May of '08 was memorable by any measure. I am a competetive swimmer and was training for the Alcatraz Sharkfest - a 1 1/2 mile swim and the chance to swim uninterupted for that distance in warm, clear and peaceful water was rare and welcome. I swam every morning. Alaulakai is an amazing destination - the setting is gorgeous, the house is warm and welcoming, beautifully appointed and the kitchen is outstanding. We enjoyed the pool then sitting at cliff side and quietly watching the movement of the water and enjoying the beauty of it all. Peacefullness of a high order. Stayed: May 2008"

"Heaven on Earth!! We chose this home because of the lovely pics on the site, but they were nothing compared to the reality! Talk about a water-front property with AMAZING ocean views! My husband staked out the hammock for himself, while the kids walked over to the Bay and swam with dolphins each afternoon! (I kid you not, we have pictures!) We drove up the hill to the lovely orchid farm and filled the house with orchid plants (so cheap!)--hope it was OK to leave them for next guests. The coffee plantation at the top of the hill had us ready for the first cup of java each morning---we had to force ourselves to drive out to the lava flow (kids, again) as we just never felt like leaving this place. My French mother-in-law preferred the pool, but the ability to choose between the bay and the pool kept everyone happy. We grilled some ahi steaks and had a dinner overlooking the bay, watching the sun set before us, and I felt like a young woman in love all over again! Thanks for offering our family the vacation we will all remember as our own private paradise!! Stayed: February 2009"

"Our week in paradise! What a house, what a location. It was our family's first trip to the Big Island, and after an experience like this, it's hard to imagine going any place else in HI! The home is amazing, impeccably kept with a gourmet kitchen, plenty of space for parents & kids, and the most amazing views. Although we never really felt like leaving, it was an excellent location from which to do day trips that let you see the whole island; I know that we saw way more of the island than other friends have who visited but have stayed in some of the more 'touristy' areas. As a family, we loved being able to do fantastic meals at the home, particularly since we were usually too tired from our day's activities (snorkeling in the ocean, swimming in the home's private pool, visiting island attractions) to feel like going out to eat at night. The owners were extremely easy to work with, and made sure that all our questions got answered as we made our decision to stay at this wonderful home! Stayed: September 2008"

"It Doesn't Get Better Than This! Let me just say that it doesn’t get better than this when it comes to vacation rentals! This was the perfect house for our family of four and we will keep coming back. The moment you walk into Alaulakai, you will be wowed by its fabulous oceanfront location, the view of Kealakekua Bay, the clever layout of this house and the inviting swimming pool. All rooms in this home face the ocean with beautiful doors that open onto the pool area and a manicured lawn, which overlooks the ocean. The kitchen was redone recently and is beautiful as well as a joy to cook in. Honestly, this is a home that you may not want to leave even though there are a host of wonderful things to do on the island. From the bluff upon which this house sits, you will see dolphins and whales. Kayaking and beaches are minutes away. The house is very private and is situated on a quiet lane along the ocean. The only thing you will hear is the palm throngs thrashing in the wind, exotic birds and the ocean splashing onto the bluff right outside your bedroom! The owners are wonderful and a pleasure to work with. They are generous with their knowledge of the island and are very accessible. You will love this house! Stayed: December 2008"
